Fertiliser from recycled batteries
The Finnish cleantech company Tracegrow has developed a process for extracting up to 80 percent of the zinc and manganese from waste alkaline batteries. These trace elements are then utilised as micronutrients in fertilisers. At Tracegrow’s production plant in Kärsämäki, Northwest Finland, the batteries are crushed and the resulting mass is filtered and purified. The mercury and other toxic metals in the batteries are also extracted and treated separately in a hazardous waste treatment plant.
